Meet the Coaching Staff
The Liberty Lightning Wrestling Club is so fortunate to have a great lineup of coaches that are ready to help your athlete develop and grow. They have tremendous experience and are ready to help build this community!
Nate Barnes is co-head coach of the Liberty Lightning Wrestling Club. Nate has worked for several years in the City High Matpac Wrestling Club. He has a lot of experience and enjoys working with youth wrestlers and helping them develop! He builds great relationships with the athletes and believes that it's important to get to know the athletes's style and coach to it to be most effective. He is passionate about the sport of wrestling and wants to help build that same excitement with our youth athletes. Nate, an Iowa City native, placed third at that IHSAA State Tournament in 1999. He was a member of the 1999 traditional and dual state championship teams and was a two time MVC district champion. Welcome Nate to the Liberty Lightning Wrestling Club!
Derek Coorough is co-head coach of the Liberty Lightning Wrestling Club. He may be familiar to some of you in the North Liberty area as he has coached in the North Liberty Rec Wrestling Club since 2009. He has coached athletes in grades PreK to 4th. He grew up in Hillsboro, WI and had a very successful high school wrestling career. He had a career record of 142-20 and was a two-time state and conference champion. He also earned another 4th place finish at state and set school records for most takedowns in a career (329) and season (150). He wrestling 103, 112, 125, and 130. He wrestled for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes from 2004 and 2009 at 141 and 149. Welcome Derek to the Liberty Lightning Wrestling Club!
Michael Fahrer is the assistant coach of the Liberty Lightning Wrestling Club. Michael grew up in New London, IA. He has two brothers was briefly introduced to kids club wrestling in the 5th grade. He started competing during his 6th grade year in the New London Tigers kids club and went on to wrestle in middle school. He wrestled varsity all four years in high school and graduated in 2005 and went to the University of Iowa to study Civil Engineering. He wrestled for the Iowa Hawkeyes for four years and graduated in 2010 with a BSCE degree. He has helped with the City High Little Hawks wrestling program and the North Liberty Rec Center youth wrestling program for the past four years. OTHER COACHING STAFF
Justin Stanley is one of the volunteer coaches for the Liberty Lightning Wrestling club. Justin attended Wilton High School from 1995-1998 and was an AAU Freestyle National Champ, 3 x high school state finalist, 2 x Iowa High School State Champion and had a high school record of 176-7. He wrestled for the University of Iowa from 1998-2002 and was a member of the NCAA National Team Champions in 1998 & 2000. Justin is excited to work with the youth athletes in the club, particularly his son, Tyson!
Tristan Garcia is from Burlington, Iowa. He attended West Burlington Junior High and High School. Tristan started wrestling in the 7th grade. He went on to be four time letter Winner, two time conference runner up, two time sectional runner up, & two time district qualifier. Tristan wrestled at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois for one year. All throughout his career, he battled injuries, which led to the end of his wrestling career. He is now looking forward to participating in the sport through coaching and motivating young athletes. He moved back to the area to attend Kirkwood College and has a goal of transferring to the University of Iowa to earn his degree in Business Management.
